The National Institute of Health has announced that it will strengthen its quarantine measures.
The announcement came on Tuesday after the World Health Organization confirmed a recent suspected case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in China's Guangdong province to be positive.
The health institute said it will strengthen surveillance to an around-the-clock system in one-hundred-25 emergency rooms and 47 medical wards nationwide for patients that show possible SARS symptoms, including high fever.
The institute also plans to conduct close inspections on medical examination procedures in some 37 designated SARS quarantine hospitals across the nation.
Ahead of the upcoming lunar New Year's holidays, the health institute will hold SARS awareness campaigns for travelers to mainland China and Southeast Asian countries, cautioning them to refrain from consuming local dishes made from wild animals and to take extra care in personal hygiene.
