Prime Minister Goh Kun instructed government officials Monday to form a task force on the establishment of a national park in central Seoul where the headquarters of U.S. military forces in South Korea are currently located.
On Saturday, South Korea and the United States agreed to relocate U.S. forces stationed at Yongsan Garrison to south of Seoul by 2007 without leaving behind any residual units.
Seoul officials have said they would construct a mammoth park, similar to New York's Central Park, in the vacated area.
Goh was quoted as saying by his office that to determine what type of a park to build is a matter that needs an appreciative eye and high-profile expertise as well as procedures to collect diverse opinions from both the public and experts.
On Sunday, Seoul City Mayor Lee Myung-bak said he would officially request the central government establish a public park in the Yongsan area.
Lee said the sites composing Yongsan garrison, occupying more than 2.64 million square meters of land, should be returned to the people to revive national identity, touching upon the fact that foreign troops, including Chinese Ching Dynasty soldiers and Japan's Imperial army, have been stationed in the area for the last 120 years.
