French President Emmanuel Macron tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, prompting numerous European leaders to get tested and self-quarantine.

The French presidential office said in a statement that Macron took a PCR test after showing mild symptoms and tested positive for the virus, adding he will self-isolate for seven days.

The statement said the 42-year-old president will continue to work and carry out his activities remotely.

A number of European leaders who came into close contact with Macron recently rushed into isolation, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, European Council President Charles Michel and other top EU officials are placing themselves in self-isolation as a precaution.
