A panel tasked to recommend two candidates for the chief of the powerful Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials(CIO) is set to resume deliberations Friday afternoon.
The committee is widely expected to finalize the list of two candidates before the day's end, as the ruling Democratic Party(DP) has pledged to launch the investigative agency in the new year.
The panel will resume its review after revisions to the CIO law took effect earlier this week. The revisions effectively incapacitate the opposition's veto power, requiring endorsements from five of seven panelists, instead of six.
Meanwhile, the main opposition People Power Party(PPP) has argued that the panel should hold off on its recommendations after one of its two panelists resigned on Thursday.
Ex-officio members and panelists representing the ruling party, however, are reportedly pushing to go ahead since they meet the required quorum.
After the committee puts forth its recommended candidates, President Moon Jae-in is expected to nominate one of the two for a parliamentary hearing.
