S. Korea Adds Record 1,097 New COVID-19 Cases

South Korea reported nearly eleven-hundred new COVID-19 cases on Sunday to hit a fresh record high.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said Sunday that one-thousand-97 new infections were detected throughout Saturday, raising the country's accumulated caseload to 49-thousand-665.

The daily figure remained above one thousand for the fifth consecutive day and replaced the previous record of one-thousand-78 set on Wednesday. It marks the largest figure since the nation reported its first case on January 20.

Of the latest cases, one-thousand-72 were local transmissions, while 25 were imported.

More than 770 cases came from the capital region, including 470 in Seoul, 244 in Gyeonggi Province and 62 in Incheon.

The number of critically ill COVID-19 patients has risen by three to 278 while 15 more deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 674. The fatality rate stands at one-point-36 percent.
