A court hearing began on Tuesday to deliberate an injunction filed by Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl to halt the two-month suspension he received from a Justice Ministry disciplinary committee.
Lawyers representing the top prosecutor and Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae started making their cases during the closed-door session which kicked off at 2 p.m. at Seoul Administrative Court,
Speaking to reporters before the hearing, Lee Suk-woong, one of Yoon's lawyers, said that there were "grave and clear" procedural flaws, as well as illegality and unfairness. He also argued that the suspension has caused irreparable damage to the prosecution and the nation, calling for the "urgent need" for Yoon to come back to work.
Choo's team, on the other hand, was expected to stress the legitimacy of the disciplinary action and claim that allowing Yoon to return to work will pose a threat to the fairness of the prosecution.
A lengthy court deliberation is expected with many speculating the verdict could come out on Wednesday or Thursday.
Yoon filed for a withdrawal of the punishment and an injunction last Thursday, a day after President Moon Jae-in endorsed the panel’s decision upon recommendation by Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae.
The panel reached the decision in the early hours of Wednesday, declaring Yoon guilty of four out of six counts of ethical and legal misconduct.
