The government has unveiled measures to reduce the use of plastic and raise the ratio of recycling.
The government finalized the measures on Thursday during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun.
The government plans to cut down the use of plastic from the production stage and to reuse or recycle plastic waste. It will seek to slash the ratio of plastic containers out of all containers from the current 47 percent to 38 percent by 2025.
It will also regulate the thickness of plastic containers in phases starting from next year and will introduce a deposit system for take-out cups from June 2022.
Also starting from 2030, all businesses will be prohibited from using disposable plastic bags. Currently, such a rule only applies to large-scale stores and supermarkets.
Through such measures, the government is aiming to reduce plastic waste by 20 percent and raise the recycling ratio of plastic waste from the current 54 percent to 70 percent by 2025.
