The government expects electricity household electricity bills in 2030 will be around 11 percent higher than in 2017.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the prediction during a public hearing on the government’s ninth basic plan that charts out the nation’s electricity supply measures between this year and 2034.
The latest basic supply plan reflects the Moon Jae-in administration’s increasing efforts to adopt more environmentally friendly energy sources. The new electricity billing system based on the plan will further charge the public to share the costs of environmental degradation caused during power production.
Asked how such changes will affect electricity fees, the ministry said it is difficult to predict citing various factors that affect electricity billing.
However, the ministry said it will “not be too far from” the previous target of 10-point-nine percent from the 2017 level, which was set under the previous government plan announced in 2017.
Meanwhile, under the ninth basic plan, 30 coal power plants in operation for 30 years or more by 2034 will be discontinued, with 24 to be transformed into liquefied natural gas(LNG) power plants to help offset expected decreases in electricity supply.
