South Korea reported one-thousand-132 new COVID-19 cases throughout Friday, the second highest daily count to date after reaching a new high just the previous day.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said Saturday that over eleven-hundred domestic infections and 28 imported cases were reported throughout Friday raising the country's accumulated caseload to 55-thousand-902.

Of the new cases, over 760 come from the wider capital region including 457 in Seoul and 250 in Gyeonggi Province.

Twenty more coronavirus deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 793. The fatality rate stands at one-point-42 percent.

New daily infections first surpassed the one thousand mark on December 13. The country is grappling to contain a third wave of the outbreak with stepped-up social distancing rules that ban personal gatherings of five or more people during the holiday season.
