U.S. Forces Korea(USFK) has requested an official meeting with the Korean government to discuss administering COVID-19 vaccines to Korean troops serving as part of the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army(KATUSA) and Korean employees at U.S. military bases.
The USFK requested the Ministry of National Defense on Monday to hold the official meeting, according to a Seoul government official.
The move came after the two allies began working-level discussions on the matter.
The South Korean official said the two sides appear to cover a wide range of issues regarding vaccine inoculation, including the South Korean government’s stance on what decision-making process to go through and how to respond to possible adverse effects of vaccination.
The U.S. military is reportedly considering allowing KATUSA soldiers and Korean employees to get vaccinated on a voluntary basis.
Last Friday, the USFK received its first batch of Moderna's coronavirus vaccines approved for emergency use and reportedly plans to begin administering them to frontline health care workers and first responders on Tuesday.
