Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun has offered an apology over the outbreak of a massive cluster of COVID-19 infections at a detention center in Seoul.

Presiding over a government meeting on COVID-19 responses on Tuesday, Chung said that 233 new infections were confirmed on Monday at the Dongbu Detention Center in eastern Seoul, raising the center's cumulative caseload to 757.

The prime minister apologized for the massive cluster at a correctional facility directly managed by the government.

Chung said that the cluster is unlikely to lead to local transmissions as most of the confirmed cases are inmates, but the detention center may report more cases after additional tests.

He ordered the Justice Ministry and health authorities to make all-out efforts to block the further spread of the virus at the center and to prevent a recurrence.
