The U.S. Forces Korea(USFK) began administering COVID-19 vaccines on Tuesday, starting with health care workers.
In a statement, the USFK said it started inoculating military and civilian health care workers, first responders and the USFK command team with the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at USFK medical treatment facilities in Osan, Gunsan and Pyeongtaek.
Though it’s limited to U.S. troops stationed in the nation, this is the first COVID-19 vaccination to be conducted in South Korea.
The USFK said following this initial phase of inoculations, additional vaccine shipments will arrive on the Korean Peninsula as Moderna and potentially other vaccines authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, are produced and shipped.
Meanwhile, USFK Commander Gen. Robert Abrams received the vaccine on Tuesday. On the USFK website, the commander strongly encouraged all eligible individuals to receive the vaccine, while saying the Moderna shot is completely voluntary.
