North Korea said it has decided to hold a rare congress of the ruling Workers' Party early next month.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) said on Wednesday that the decision was made at the party's politburo meeting the previous day.

The Eighth Party Congress, which comes five years after the previous one in 2016, is expected to be held between January 1 and 10.

The KCNA said the politburo meeting examined and confirmed the qualifications of the delegates and proposals for forming the presidium, members of the platform and secretariat of the planned party congress.

It added that the politburo meeting also appreciated that innovative achievements and progress had been made in all fields during the "80-day campaign."

Kim launched the campaign to achieve the country's national and economic goals ahead of the party congress.
