The government has assessed that South Korea is slowly passing the peak of the third wave of COVID-19 as special quarantine measures for the year-end holiday season are displaying signs of containing the virus spread.

Son Young-rae, a senior health official, said on Sunday in a press briefing that the nation appears to be containing the recent resurgence thanks to the continued enforcement of tougher social distancing and preemptive testing.

The official assessed that the nation appeared to be staying at the peak of the third wave or slowly passing it, citing the number of recent infections.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(KDCA) said the daily average of local infections for the past seven days reached 931-point-nine, down from one-thousand-17 recorded between December 20 and 26.

It added that the nation's reproduction rate for COVID-19 went down from one-point-11 to one last week.
