Justice Minister-nominee Park Beom-kye has asked rank-and-file prosecutors to join in efforts to reform the prosecution.
Speaking to reporters Monday, the former judge and ruling Democratic Party lawmaker said he believes his nomination is President Moon Jae-in's message for him to serve as the final pitcher in prosecutorial reform.
Park said through previous justice ministers, there has been progress including an organizational overhaul, the launch of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials(CIO) and conditions that will foster more human rights-based investigations.
But the nominee said the top-down command culture unique to the prosecution still remains and stressed the importance of various opinions and communication in a pluralistic, democratic society.
He said "justice" is viewed differently between prosecutors and the public and there should be a “coexisting justice” that is acceptable to everyone. The best way to achieve this is through human rights.
The nominee also apologized for an alleged omission in reporting his real estate holdings, saying he is to blame regardless of the reason.
