The U.S. Congress has officially confirmed the victory of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden. 

According to foreign media outlets on Thursday, a joint session of the Congress ratified Biden’s 306 electoral college votes over U.S. President Donald Trump’s 232.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who also attended the joint parliamentary session, declared that Biden defeated the incumbent president, putting a formal end to the 2020 presidential race. 

The declaration was made hours after violent supporters of Trump stormed the Capitol to challenge the certification, resulting in the death of four people. 

Following the certification, Trump promised there will be an “orderly transition” of power on January 20, while saying he still disagrees with the election outcome. 

Meanwhile, the South Korean government congratulated the official victory of Biden and U.S. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. 

In a statement on Thursday, the South Korean Foreign Ministry also expressed Seoul’s hope to closely communicate and cooperate with the Biden administration on various issues, including the bilateral alliance, denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and climate change.
