Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Friday dismissed a South Korean court ruling earlier in the day that demanded Tokyo to compensate a group of South Korean victims of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery.

According to Japan’s Kyodo News, Suga said the verdict is unacceptable, adding sovereign states do not submit to the jurisdiction exercised by other states under international law.

Suga said the lawsuit filed by a dozen South Korean victims should be dismissed, calling for the South Korean government to intervene.

The Japanese leader claimed that the issue of wartime sexual slavery has been resolved completely through the 1965 treaty concerning the normalization of the bilateral relations.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato issued a similar response at a press conference, regretting the South Korean court ruling.
