The Han River in Seoul has frozen for the first time this year as frigid temperatures continue in the capital city.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said the river froze early Saturday when the temperature plunged to minus 16-point-six degrees Celsius. It's the first freeze in two years following a mild winter last year and also comes about four days faster than average.
As the biting cold spell continues, over two-thousand cases of water meters and water pipes freezing and bursting have been reported nationwide as of 6 a.m. Saturday.
Disruptions to traffic has eased for the most part with airplanes and expressways operating as normal. Ten roads across the country still remain blocked including in mountainous areas.
Authorities vowed to provide support for elderly citizens living alone and people especially vulnerable to the cold weather, and to conduct safety measures such as removing snow from roofs and roads to prevent icy conditions.
