With most parts of the nation experiencing an extended cold snap, there has been a growing number of cold-related illnesses and accidents.

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters said that as of Sunday morning, 12 people had suffered from hypothermia or frostbite since Wednesday.

Also, freezing temperatures and icy conditions have led to increased accidents, with cold wave alerts issued for most parts of the nation.

Nearly 52-hundred cases of accidents were reported across the nation due to frozen water gauges and pipes on Sunday. The number of reported accidents more than doubled from the previous day.

About 140 hectares of farmland in North Jeolla Province was also hit by the sub-zero temperatures.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said morning lows in Seoul fell to minus 12-point-eight degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Seoul and the central region are forecast to receive snow on Sunday afternoon.
