The local startup developer of controversial artificial intelligence(AI) chatbot "Lee Luda" has suspended its service, amid criticism over its use of discriminatory and offensive language, as well as an alleged leak of personal information.
In a statement on Monday, Scatter Lab apologized for the Facebook-based messenger chatbot's discriminatory remarks against homosexuals, the disabled, women and others in its conversations with users, stressing that they do not reflect the thoughts of the company.
The startup added that it continues to upgrade the program to prevent a recurrence.
"Lee Luda," which operates based on deep learning, quickly gained popularity, attracting more than 750-thousand users since its debut last December.
As for the alleged leak of users' personal information, Scatter Lab apologized, saying it adhered to relevant guidelines, but failed to "sufficiently communicate" with its users.
The company pledged to clarify its use of personal data and continue to better deal with sensitive information.
