The South Korean government will lift development restrictions for some 100 million square meters of land near military installations, which is about 35 times the size of Seoul's Yeouido.

The Defense Ministry said on Thursday that 100-point-67 million square meters of such property will be open for development under the country's defense reform plan.

It marks a 31-percent increase from 77 million square meters of land that had restrictions lifted last year.

Under the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act, development in areas close to military facilities requires prior consultations with the military to protect the installations and the safety of nearby residents.

The ministry said the lifting of restrictions will take effect on Tuesday, after which local governments will no longer be required to consult with the military regarding development in the affected areas.
