Foreign media say Myanmar’s senior government officials, including de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, were detained by the military in raids Monday morning.
According to Reuters and AFP, Myo Nyunt, the spokesperson for Myanmar’s ruling party the National League for Democracy(NLD) said that Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders had been “taken” early in the morning. The spokesperson said given the current state of things, it can be assumed that the military is staging a coup.
Reuters reported that Myanmar’s state-run MRTV television said in a Facebook post that it was unable to broadcast due to technical issues.
The raids come after the country’s powerful military hinted at staging a coup as it protested the results of last November’s general elections, which the NLD won in a landslide.
The raids took place just hours before parliament was due to begin its first session after last year’s election. No official statement has yet to be released from Myanmar’s government or the military regarding the foreign media reports.
