Former United States President Donald Trump was acquitted on Saturday of inciting an insurrection at his second impeachment trial.

The U.S. Senate issued the verdict in a vote of 57 to 43 at the end of the historic impeachment trial. A two-thirds majority of the 100 U.S. senators, 67, was required for a conviction.

According to CNN and other foreign media, all Democrats and seven Republicans reportedly voted to convict Trump.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted in January to impeach Trump on charges that he incited an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Right after the acquittal, Trump welcomed the verdict and said that the trial had been yet another phase of the "greatest witch hunt" in the history of the United States.
