Big Hit Entertainment, the agency behind global K-pop sensation BTS, will team up with world-leading Universal Music Group(UMG) to form a new global K-pop boy band to debut in the United States.
Management from the two companies made the announcement online Thursday, adding that they have established a joint venture label between Big Hit and UMG’s LA-based Geffen Records for the group.
Big Hit Global CEO Yoon Seok-jun said the group members will be selected through a global audition program that will likely air in the U.S. in 2022.
The South Korean company will take charge of the audition, training through the "K-pop system," media content production for fans and fan interaction through Weverse, a platform it currently operates.
UMG will utilize its network in album production, global distribution and production of the audition program in partnership with a U.S. media firm.
As music labels and agencies seek to enhance artists' communication with their fans, UMG and YG Entertainment, another K-pop powerhouse, recently announced plans to invest in KBYK Live, a joint venture between Big Hit and U.S. streaming service provider Kiswe.
The companies expect the partnership to help them showcase their artists on VenewLive, a streaming platform operated by KBYK Live.
