The South Korean government seeks to send a team of inspectors to Myanmar next month following the presumed discovery of the fuselage of a KAL plane brought down in a 1987 bombing and is discussing the matter with the government of the Southeast Asian.

Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong revealed the ongoing talks with Myanmar while speaking before the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee on Thursday, noting the goal is to send inspection crews to Myanmar in early March.

He said Seoul is making such efforts to avoid possible disruption to the inspection by the monsoon season in Myanmar that usually begins late April or early May.

Seoul was initially preparing to send inspectors after completing related talks with Myanmar led by then de-factor civilian leader and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, but the situation has become uncertain following the recent military coup in the Southeast Asian country.

Korean Air Lines(KAL) Flight 858 carrying 104 passengers and 11 crew members exploded while flying from Baghdad to Seoul on November 29, 1987. No wreckage or belongings had been discovered since then, but a fuselage presumed to belong to the downed plane was spotted in the sea off Myanmar early last year.

Two past investigations by the South Korean government concluded the crash was caused by a bomb placed by North Korean agent Kim Hyon-hui.

However, bereaved families and civic groups have questioned this, pointing to the alleged lack of evidence and suggesting other scenarios, including that the downing may have been arranged by South Korea's then-military regime to win elections.
