South Korea will suspend exports of military supplies to Myanmar and also reconsider development projects with the country.
The Seoul government said Friday that despite repeated calls from the international community, including South Korea, Myanmar's military and police continue to exercise brute force on anti-coup protesters.
As such, Seoul will halt new exchanges and cooperation in the fields of defense and security, as well as tighten reviews of export permits on strategic industrial goods such as tear gas and items that could be used to suppress protesters. South Korea hasn’t shipped military supplies to Myanmar since early 2019.
Seoul has pledged to continue to assist in restoring democracy, even as it inspects contingency plans to protect South Korean residents and companies in Myanmar.
While it is reviewing suspending development projects with Nay Pyi Taw, South Korea will allow Myanmar citizens to extend their sojourn in the country on humanitarian grounds until the situation stabilizes in the Southeast Asian country.
