U.S. President Joe Biden has addressed the series of shootings that occurred in Atlanta on Tuesday that resulted in eight deaths, including four South Koreans, calling the incident “very, very troubling.”
According to CNN, Biden told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he knows Asian Americans are “very concerned” about the shootings, citing that he’s been “speaking about the brutality against Asian Americans for the last couple of months."
However, Biden was quick to add that he’s making no connection at this moment to the motivation of the killer. The FBI and the Justice Department are seeking to determine whether the shootings were a hate crime targeting Asian Americans.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the first person of South Asian descent to hold her office, called the shootings “tragic,” adding that the incident spoke to the "larger issue" of violence.
Meanwhile, law enforcement officials have indicted the suspect of the shootings, Robert Aaron Long, on charges of murder and are looking into whether it was a sex addiction or hate crime that drove Long to commit the shootings.
