More than 18 thousand South Korean soldiers have applied for units to be deployed in Iraq.
A Defense Ministry official said the competition ratio for assignment to the Middle East station exceeded five to one.
The Defense Ministry posted a notice for applications late last month to recruit three thousand-500 troops to be sent to Iraq to help rebuild the war-torn country.
The competition ratio stands at 7.4 to one for officers and 3.3 to one for enlisted service members.
The ministry expects the overall competition ratio to top ten to one by next Tuesday, the deadline for applications.
