Canada Refuses Asylum to Former N. Korean Diplomat

A Canadian newspaper says Canada has refused granting refugee status to a former North Korean diplomat, despite conceding he could face execution if returned to his Stalinist homeland.
According to the Globe and Mail Thursday, Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board said Song Dae-Ri did not deserve Canadian protection because the diplomat, as a former North Korean official, was complicit in crimes against humanity committed by his government.
The board ruled, however, that Song's six-year-old son was eligible for refugee status in Canada because, as the offspring of a dissident, he would face persecution if sent back to North Korea.
