2 Koreas Agree to Cooperate for Successful Nuclear Talks in Beijing

South and North Korea agreed Friday to work to make the upcoming six-way talks on Feb. 25th "fruitful" to produce a peaceful solution to the 15-month stalemate over Pyongyang's nuclear arms program.

The agreement to cooperate in order to realize a successful second round of the nuclear talks came in a six-point joint news statement released at the end of four days of ministerial talks between the two Koreas.

During the four days of cabinet-level talks in Seoul, South and North Korea also agreed to hold high-level military talks soon, chaired by general-level officers, to help ease military tensions on the Korean peninsula, including efforts to prevent clashes in the West Sea.

Despite contentious words between the two sides, the Seoul talks were seen as producing some progress on inter-Korean projects, including an agreement to hold a new round of reunions for separated family members in late March at Mount Geumgang.

The Koreas also agreed to press ahead in earnest with the building of an industrial complex in the North's border town of Kaesong, a project about which North Korea voiced disappointment at the lack of progress.

South and North Korea also reached agreement in principle to allow athletes of the two sides to march together during the opening ceremony of this year's Olympic Games in Athens.
