South Koreans would get up to two billion won in compensation if they were found to have contracted bird flu after eating chicken and duck meat.

The insurance plan was announced Tuesday by a group of associations representing fowl meat producers, processors and owners of chicken and duck farms across the nation.

A spokesman for the group said it has subscribed to the insurance program to publicize the safety of domestic chicken and duck meat.

The domestic chicken and duck industry has been hit hard by the recent spread of the deadly bird flu virus in Asia.
