A top U.S. infectious disease expert predicted that everyone will need to receive a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine at some point. 

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, made the prediction on Thursday while appearing on a CBS program. 

The White House chief medical advisor reportedly said that it is urgent for immune-compromised people to get a third dose right away, but it is likely that everyone will need a booster shot at some point. 

Fauci added that at this particular point, he doesn't feel the need to give boosters right now, apart from the immunocompromised. 

He said that data is being followed literally on a weekly and monthly basis to determine how the level of protection is diminishing, and scientists are already starting to see indications in some sectors about durability over time.
