The 114th anniversary of the death of Korean freedom fighter Yi Jun was observed in a ceremony at the Yi Jun Peace Museum in The Hague in the Netherlands on Friday.

Some 60 guests including the South Korean ambassador, the local mayor and a parliamentary delegation from Seoul attended the event, which also marked the 76th anniversary of Korean independence from Japanese colonial rule.

Ambassador Jeong Yeon-doo said he reflects on the heartfelt dedication of independence activists who served at home and abroad such as Yi Jun.

Yi was sent to the Hague Convention of 1907 along with two others as special envoys of King Gojong to denounce Japan's invasion of Korea and tell the world the 1905 protectorate treaty Japan had Korea forcibly sign is invalid.

Yi did not make it into the convention room due to Japan's obstruction and later died that year at a hotel in the Netherlands.
