Minor opposition People's Party chairman Ahn Cheol-soo has announced an end to merger talks with the main opposition People Power Party(PPP) with no deal struck.

In a press conference at the National Assembly on Monday, Ahn said that regrettably, efforts to unify the two parties have come to an end and that he's sorry for failing to deliver good news to those hoping for a merger.

Ahn said he reached the conclusion that a merger for merger's sake or getting rid of one small party is not desirable to achieve a transfer of power or to build a better country. He continued that a change of government must not repeat confrontational politics centered on two big parties and bring about bold reforms.

Ahn said he and his party will muster up courage and continue to walk down a tough path and serve the country.

During the April Seoul mayoral election period, Ahn said he would seek a merger with the PPP for victory against the ruling Democratic Party in next year's presidential election.

The two sides launched working-level talks on June 22 but discussions broke down late last month due to differences on changing the party name and how to field a unified candidate.
