The upcoming Tokyo Paralympics will be held without spectators over COVID-19 fears as with the Tokyo Olympics.

The Japanese government announced the decision in a statement on Monday after a meeting with the International Paralympic Committee, the organizing committee and the Tokyo government.

The statement said the Games will be held without fans, with an exception for students participating in a government-backed education program.

The Paralympics will open next Tuesday and last until September 5 in the capital city Tokyo and the prefectures of Chiba, Saitama and Shizuoka.

The Japanese government reportedly plans to hold a COVID-19 meeting on Tuesday to extend the state of emergency in Tokyo, Saitama and Shizuoka until September 12.
