The lower house of the California State Legislature has passed a resolution that seeks to mark November 22 Kimchi Day in California.

The Los Angeles office of the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation announced on Monday that the California State Assembly passed the resolution that stipulates Korea is the country of origin of kimchi.

Assembly member Steven Choi said he submitted the resolution to show California’s support of the South Korean government’s move to celebrate the day. He stressed that it also aims to correct misinformation on kimchi’s origin, underlining that it is representative of Korea.

California is the first state in the U.S. aiming to officially celebrate Kimchi Day.

The government set November 22 as Kimchi Day last year in a bid to promote the industry as well as to pass down and advance the culture surrounding the popular fermented dish.
