Reuters and the Associated Press report that the U.S. has launched a drone strike against Islamic State(IS) in eastern Afghanistan, less than two days after a suicide bombing at Kabul airport killed 13 U.S. troops and scores of Afghan civilians.

The Pentagon said Saturday the strike took place in Nangarhar province, targeting the terrorist group's Afghan affiliate known as Islamic State Khorasan or IS-K, which claimed responsibility for the airport attack.

A U.S. military statement said that initial indications are that the target has been killed with no civilian casualties.

Other than the fact that a "planner" of the attack has been removed, details such as the scale of the drone strike are not known.

The Thursday airport bombing claimed some 170 lives including 13 U.S. personnel. President Joe Biden promised retaliation holding IS-K responsible.

Russia's ambassador to Afghanistan said that around four thousand IS agents are believed to be operating in the country.
