United States President Joe Biden has reportedly authorized the country's armed forces to strike at targets associated with the Islamic State (IS) in Afghanistan.

U.S. news outlet Politico on Saturday quoted U.S. officials as saying that Biden authorized the Pentagon to strike any targets associated with the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), a local branch of the IS group that claimed responsibility for the recent bombings near Kabul airport.

The officials reportedly said that the Pentagon can strike IS terrorists without prior approval from the White House according to Biden's order.

Pentagon leaders reportedly have had such authority before, but Biden reiterated it in his instructions to the U.S. military on Friday.

One official said that the United States will attack any new IS target they find.

Politico said that the United States will carry out new airstrikes on ISIS targets in the coming days.
