The U.S. Department of Defense announced on Monday that the U.S. military has completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan, ending a 20-year war against the Taliban.

In a Pentagon press briefing on Monday, Gen. Frank McKenzie, head of U.S. Central Command, announced the completion of the U.S.' withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the military mission to evacuate American citizens, third country nationals and vulnerable Afghans.

McKenzie said that the last American military plane took off from Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul at around 3:30 p.m. East Coast time, on August 30.

The mission was completed before August 31, the actual deadline set by President Joe Biden, marking an end to the 20-year war triggered by the attacks on September 11, 2001.

U.S. President Joe Biden said in April that it was time to end America's longest war.
