Competition to Join Troop Dispatch to Iraq at 17:1

A record number of soldiers have applied for deployment in Iraq.

The Defense Ministry said a total of 56,000 soldiers applied for a slot in South Koreas military contingent to be sent to the war-torn country.

The competition ratio for the overseas posting was 17 to 1 among enlisted personnel and 16 to 1 among officers.

On a related note, a ministry official said a number of successful applicants are part of the same family.

Brigadier General Choi Jung-chul will be going to the Gulf with his son who is an enlisted private-first-class, while Staff Sergeant Kim Hyung-jin and Kim Myung-hyun are twins.
