A U.S. military commander assessed that the United States would be safe from the hypersonic capability of North Korea.
The North said on Wednesday that it test-fired a newly developed hypersonic missile the previous day.
Gen. Glen VanHerck, the commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said on Thursday that the U.S.' intelligence authorities are still looking into the North Korean claim.
VanHerck, who also leads the U.S. Northern Command, said in a Department of Defense press briefing that his assessment is that the U.S. mainland would be safe from the missile North Korea claims to have tested.
Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby also said in the briefing that while the U.S. has determined that this event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, territory or allies, it does highlight the destabilizing impact of the North's illicit weapons program.
He added that nothing changes about the U.S.' commitment to its alliances with both Japan and South Korea and that the U.S. is closely consulting with allies and partners.
