Property Damage from Heavy Snowfall Reaches 400 Bln Won

The nation's anti-disaster headquarters has estimated property damage from the recent snowfall in central provinces at nearly four-hundred billion won or some three-hundred-40 million U.S. dollars.
By region, South Chungcheong province was hit the hardest, with some two-hundred billion won in damages, followed by North Chungcheong province with some one-hundred-70 billion won.
Greenhouses for vegetables and fruits suffered the most damage, along with livestock stables.
On Friday, a record snowfall of 50 centimeters hit the central city of Daejeon, one hundred-60 kilometers south of Seoul. It was the heaviest March snowfall in the region since weather records were first compiled in 1904.
Meanwhile, the head of the Korea Highway Corporation announced his resignation, apologizing to the public for failing to respond properly to the heavy snowfall.
Thousands of motorists were stranded for more than ten hours Friday on some sections of the Seoul-Busan Highway and Jungbu Highway after the central region was hit with the heavy snowfall.
