273 N. Koreans Defected to S. Korea This Year

The Unification Ministry has announced that a total of two-hundred-73 North Koreans defected to South Korea this year as of Wednesday.

A ministry official said the figure is an increase of 18 percent compared to the same period last year.

The official said the number of North Koreans defecting to South Korea has doubled every year from 1998 through 2002, but has tapered off since last year, when the figure reached around one-thousand-200.

The total number of North Koreans who have sought asylum in the South totaled four-thousand-410 as of last year.
