S. Korea, U.S. in Final Negotiations on Seoul

A high-level military delegation is holding final negotiations with the U.S. military in Baghdad over Seoul's planned dispatch of troops to the war-torn country of Iraq.

The two sides exchanged views on unsettled points they failed to agree on regarding the deployment of South Korea's Zaitun unit in the northern region of Kirkuk.

Their discussions focused on reports that the U.S. has no specific plans to pull out its forces from the airport around Kirkuk or from the Hawija region, where the Korean troops are supposed to be deployed. The two sides also focused on defining the scope of jurisdiction for the three-thousand-strong South Korean unit in the event the U.S. military remains in the Kirkuk region.

Last week, an informed source said U.S. officials want to stay in the region, citing that the combat equipment of Korean troops would be insufficient to mount counterattacks against Iraqi insurgents.

The four-member delegation will return to Seoul on Friday.
