In the United States, a group of Congressmen have submitted a bill to the House aimed at protecting human rights in North Korea.

The bill, entitled "North Korean Human Rights Act of 2004," was jointly sponsored by Iowa republican Rep. Jim Leach and other members of Congress.

The bill calls for all possible support for North Koreans escaping to China and legislations that would make it easier for prospective North Korean refugees to seek asylum in the United States.

Rep. Leach currently chairs the subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the House International Relations Committee.
