The National Security Council says it will conduct emergency security inspections in major facilities across the nation.
On Monday, National Security Adviser Kwon Jin-ho visited a high-speed railway station and Incheon International Airport to inspect their security maintenance systems.
Kwon's visit comes two days before the opening of the high-speed railway on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Acting President Goh Kun ordered extra security precautions against terrorist attacks in the wake of the recent train bombings in Madrid, allegedly linked to Spain's troop dispatch to Iraq.
Goh had warned that South Korea, too, may not be safe from such attacks as terrorists are targeting countries that have sent troops to help with the U.S. occupation of Iraq.
Meanwhile, the NSC recently drew up a national counter-terrorism manual and distributed its copies to related government agencies including the Defense Ministry, Ministry of Administration and Home Affairs and the National Intelligence Service.
