The figure includes 23 North Koreans who sought asylum in the South last week.

The National Intelligence Service is investigating the identities of the six men and 17 women who entered the country Friday via a third country.

The authorities are also questioning the defectors on the circumstances under which they came to the South as well as their escape routes.

Last year, 1,285 North Koreans defected to the South.

More than 4,000 North Koreans have escaped to the South since the Korean War ended in 1953.
