"Taegukgi" Sets Viewer Record at 11.1 Million

Another record has fallen, this time in motion picture.

Taegukgi, a Korean blockbuster, has sold an estimated 11.1 million tickets as of Saturday. It's the most tickets ever sold for a movie in Korea, and also the country's top-grossing film of all time.

The figure topped the record of another domestic blockbuster hit "Silmido?as of the same day.

The two films are the only movies to have sole more than 10 million tickets in South Korea, with Taegukgi posting the record figure within less than a month since it began showing in theaters.

Taegukgi, whose title refers to South Korea's national flag, depicts the story of two young brothers who were forced to join the army during the Korean War.

Silmido is a film about a failed secret commando project to assassinate the former leader of North Korea Kim Il-sung in the 1960s.

Taegukgi topped the film market records formerly set by Silmido and Part Three to the popular "Lord of the Rings?trilogy, "Return of the King? for the highest on-line reservation, the most number of screens and the largest number of daily viewers.

Economic experts put the film's possible contribution to the country's economy at up to 500 billion won or 423 million U.S. dollars.
