S. Korea Downs Malaysia 3-0, Gains Athens Seat

South Korea?s under-23 Olympic soccer team defeated Malaysia 3-0 Wednesday at the Suwon World Cup stadium, south of Seoul, in final-round qualifiers to virtually guarantee itself a spot in the summer Athens Olympics.

South Korea sits atop Group A after victories against China, Iran and Malaysia.

Malaysia remains at the bottom of the group with only one point from a 1-1 away draw with China, and suffering 4-1 and 1-0 home defeats against Iran and South Korea last month.

South Korea will square off with China in an away match May 1 and host Iran on May 12 on the road to Athens. The Koreans will be making their fifth consecutive appearance in the Olympics soccer finals.

Japan topped Group B, to earn one of the three Asian spots for the Athens Games, with Iraq leading Group C.
