North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has held summit talks with Chinese president Hu Jintao in Beijing.

Sources said that during Monday's closed-door summit, Kim stressed the need for incentives, including a security guarantee, in return for the North's nuclear dismantlement. Hu conveyed to Kim Washington's hard-line stance on the North as reiterated by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney last week in Beijing.

Kim also requested continued Chinese aid for the North, while Hu stressed the need for Pyongyang to pursue open-door policies.

On Tuesday, his third day in China, Kim is scheduled to meet with senior officials, including Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China Jiang Zemin and Premier Wen Jiabao. Kim will also visit information technology firms and industrial complexes before heading back home on Wednesday.

During his visit to China last week, Cheney repeated U.S. calls for Pyongyang to completely, verifiably and irreversibly dismantle its nuclear weapons program. He also warned that negotiations on North Korea's nuclear issue must start showing results, given the seriousness of the threat posed by Pyongyang's nuclear programs.

In Washington, a senior U.S. State Department official says Beijing has notified Washington that Kim is visiting China for talks with Chinese President Hu.
